Orbi-Time

Automaton- Individual Project
2023

Orbi-Time is an innovative take on the traditional automaton clock, redefining the concept of timekeeping by introducing a unique measurement of time that is distinct in its rules and base system. Unlike conventional seconds, minutes, and hours, Orbi-Time's time unit is variable, personalized to each individual's interaction with the device. As users play with it, the duration it takes to complete a cycle varies, reflecting the diverse ways people perceive and handle time.

At the heart of Orbi-Time's functionality is the utilization of a Time-of-Flight sensor. This sensor plays a critical role in capturing the return journey of a ball within the clock mechanism. Each cycle, marked by the ball's movement, is meticulously tracked by the TOF sensor, which calculates the time taken for each round. The data gathered is then cumulatively displayed through a series of LEDs, offering a visual representation of the elapsed time.

This method not only quantifies time in a novel manner but also transforms the interaction into a visual spectacle, making it a unique blend of artistic expression and time measurement.

The clock serves as an interactive art installation, inviting users to explore their relationship with time in a playful yet thought-provoking manner.
